October Meeting Summary

  • Guest Educational Presenter: Inner City Pastoral Ministries(ICPM), Pastor Quinn Strikwerda. A frontline group working out of Bissell Centre today was once working out of Bissell United Church. ICPM was brought in to help with the spiritual health of Bissell clients. Quinn welcomes anyone no matter their belief, who would love to chat about their spiritual needs or everyday concerns. ICPM provides lunches on Sundays with the help of their many dedicated volunteers. They also have an Indigenous Helper - Verna Fischer. Lunch Chair Maria K. is always looking for people to help out with the lunches.   • October 16th to 19th the city of Edmonton held their Public Hearings on the proposed Zoning Bylaw Renewals. ECOHH - Nadine Chalifoux Chair spoke opposing the renewal approval. More work was advised including completion of the district plans. Note: The renewal was approved without district plans.

  • ECOHH launches the Eventbrite link for members and concerned citizens to go get their tickets for the National Housing Day Event November 22nd at the Metro Cinema. Tickets can be purchased direct form ECOHH or via the Eventbrite link. Note: This event is over now.

NOVEMBER UPDATES

November Meeting Summary

  • Guest Educational Presenter: DIALOG Design, Urban Planner Jordan Reimer, sharing Proposed Pedway at the Homeless Memorial Plaza. Downtown revitalization that is underway includes the extension of the underground pedway from City Hall north. The proposed entrance above ground emerges on the east end of the Homeless Memorial Plaza. Jordan and his team share how the proposal will include a large sheltered Pedway to the underground, upgraded landscaping and friendly benches and tables. Many members shared their concerns including the accessibility for individuals with disabilities and our homless whom use the established area for connecting to their lost loved ones and to sit safely without scrutiny or discrimination. More will come and ECOHH will be updated as the project progresses.

  • Eric Rice shared an update from Taproot that will allow for some great opportunities. Stay posted for more to come.

  • Membership renewals were encouraged as we near the end of 2023.

  • National Housing Day event still had tickets available.

-November 16th, 9 am - 12noon, Edmonton Interfaith Housing Society formerly Capital Region Interfaith Housing Initiative invited Nadine Chalifoux to present on ECOHH. The event included several spiritual leaders, city of Edmonton, other housing related groups and ECOHH to talk about Affordable Rents in Edmonton.

-November 21st, 11:30 am ECOHH joined Social Housing and Human Rights movement in a webinar to launch the call to action campaign. Check out more and join the movement @moresochousing.ca

-November 21st, at 4:30pm we heard more about the concerns for tenants from the Alberta Law Reform Institute(ALRI).

-November 22nd, 7pm ECOHH presented their National Housing Day event screening the documentary on the housing crisis and the role financialization plays in it. Check out the main page for more on the event.
