Since 2000, Canada has recognized November 22 as National Housing Day, an opportunity to raise awareness about housing and homelessness and reflect on ongoing challenges.

However, National Housing Day has increasingly become an occasion for governments and developers to celebrate their work while thousands of Canadians remain without homes or precariously housed.

Everyone deserves safe, affordable, and accessible housing. Achieving this requires political commitment, public investment, and accountability from all levels of government.

National Housing Day of Action is an opportunity to come together, build organizing power and demand government action to ensure everyone has a place to call home.

National Housing Day of Action 2026

This year's event is a march starting at noon from the Alberta Legislature Building (North Plaza above 97 Ave between 109 St and 107 St) to the Homeless Memorial Plaza (103A Ave & 100 St), where a rally will begin at 12:45PM.

This event is a collaboration with several grassroots organizations in Edmonton and is built around our collective housing justice demands directed at all levels of government. The rally will showcase incredible, diverse grassroots work happening in Edmonton and encourage attendees to get involved after the event. Lastly, the rally will host donation tables to distribute essential items from ECOHH’s donation drive to people in need.

Attendees are encouraged to bring the following items or donate them beforehand to a designated drop-off location by November 21 (Earth’s Refillery Co-op, Paper Birch Books, Magpie Books, River Valley Storage):

ECOHH is based out of amiskwaciwâskahikan on the traditional territory of the Nêhiyawak (Cree), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux), Dene, Isga Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda), and the Otipimiswak Métis Nation of Alberta. We believe a treaty is an inheritance, a responsibility, and a relationship. We hope by recognizing our status as treaty people it will help us to be good stewards of the land, good ancestors to all our children and good neighbours to one another.
