Here’s a roundup of housing news and issues that we noticed this week:
From ECOHH’s social media
Analysis of shortcomings of the federal budget in relation to housing
Review Panel Reports on the Right to Safe, Adequate and Affordable Housing for Women, Two Spirit, Trans, and Gender-Diverse People
Finland designed entire apartment blocks for the homeless where rent adjusts to income and jobs are found first
City of Edmonton announces housing projects, some of it affordable, on 10 former surplus school sites
Reannouncement notice for federal-provincial money for undefined affordable housing
Alberta's recent Speech from the Throne had not a word about housing security but in Manitoba better rent security is promised as part of its throne speech. Premier Wab Kinew promised new rules to stop “unfair” rent increases and strengthen renters’ rights.
“When we introduce this bill, I’m thinking it’s going to be a good balance of ensuring landlords are going to get what they need to be able to keep up the investments (in their properties), but you, the person paying the rent, are going to be able to have greater clarity that we’ll have something closer to real rent control in Manitoba,” he said.
We persist! National Housing Day 2025 is over. Edmonton still has a huge deficit of non-market rental housing, supportive housing, diverse safe & healthy temporary shelter options, income support payments that enable renting adequate shelter, and community mental health services. Edmonton still has thousands of people suffering homelessness and all the human and economic costs involved. ECOHH held a rally yesterday to call for provincial investment in these things. Direct contact with the premier and other elected leaders needs to continue every day, demanding action. Get involved with ECOHH and be a part of this advocacy.
