National Housing Day of Action 2025

Updated: Nov 14

ECOHH invites Edmontonians to join us at the Alberta Legislature on Saturday November 22 at noon to mark National Housing Day and demand immediate government action to end the social disaster of homelessness.

Since the launch of the Government of Alberta's “Stronger Foundations Affordable Housing Strategy” in 2021, the number of people who are homeless in Edmonton has almost doubled, from 2,800 in 2021 to close to 5,000 in 2025. See the data tables here.

According to Civida, the primary manager of government-funded community housing in Edmonton, the wait list for affordable housing pegged at 30% of income has risen from 7,300 in 2023 to over 10,000 in 2025. See the news article here.

The number of people suffering amputations due to frostbite reached its highest point in Edmonton in more than a decade, and more than half of these people were homeless. See news article here.

The number of people seeking emergency shelter every night in the province increased 30% from 2023 to 2024 from an average of 777 per night to an average of 1,108 per night, and year over year increased from 950 in January of 2024 to 1,500 in January of 2025. See ECOHH's data analysis here.

Clearly, the Government of Alberta’s housing strategy has failed, and recent actions, such as the failure to mention "housing" or "homelessness" once in the Speech From the Throne that is meant to set the government's agenda for the coming term, demonstrate a continuing lack of commitment.

ECOHH calls on all people who care about our city's most vulnerable population and about quality of life for all citizens to join us on November 22 and to spread the word about housing precarity.

You can find some opportunities for action on this document.
