"people who will eventually live in the subsidized housing also need to have a say in the process"

Updated: Nov 15, 2024

Taproot Edmonton has released its third explainer in a series of articles about housing in Edmonton, Housing Complex. Reporter Stephanie Swensrude delves into the reasons that Edmonton has a significant shortfall in housing available for those on the lower end of the income spectrum.

The decision by the Federal Government to stop new investments in social housing in the 1990s, the always-challenging relationship between Alberta's provincial government and the Federal Government, and the lack of purpose-built rental housing all play a role.

One of the challenges facing housing supply is the deterioration of older subsidized housing.
