On April 17 ECOHH collaborated with the Affordable Housing Solutions Lab (AHSL), Bear Claw Beaver Hills House, 4B Harm Reduction (4BHR), Young Communist League (YCL), and the Coalition for Justice and Human Rights (C4JHR) to host an information and motivation session at the University of Alberta.
Hundreds of Edmontonians become homeless and die on our streets every year. This is not a personal failure, but a systemic one. Our political leaders cater to corporate landlords and dismantle public housing, allowing rampant rent hikes and evictions to drive record homelessness. These actions are flagrant violations of international law, yet they are the norm in our city. It does not have to be this way; Edmonton has more than enough money—and homes—to provide for all of its residents. In the midst of several global crises—unaffordability, war, climate disaster—we are all at risk of losing our homes.
David Rivera-Kohr, ECOHH member and one of the key organizers of the event, provided a slide presentation about Edmonton's housing crisis.
You can watch "Edmonton’s homelessness crisis: elites are the cause, we are the solution" here.
Other speakers included Sam Mason, President of the Coalition for Justice and Human Rights, Angie Staines of 4B Harm Reduction Society, and a speaker from the Young Communist League. Please check out their websites for info on the great work they do.
